Encryption & privacy

Your conversations never touch our servers.

Mariner Mesh is end-to-end encrypted by design. Keys are generated on your device and never leave it. When you are off-grid there is no server in the path at all — traffic moves directly between devices in your group.

    Every message, photo and voice transmission is encrypted on your device and decrypted only on the recipient device.

    Private keys are generated in the secure enclave and are never uploaded, escrowed or recoverable by us.

    Relayed traffic passes through group devices as encrypted ciphertext. Nothing is retained after delivery.

    Download Mariner Mesh, pick a handle and create a group. Share the invite while you still have service — or scan a code in person, which works fully offline.

  2. Step 2: Head out of coverage

    The app detects when cellular drops and switches to the mesh automatically. Nearby group members link directly; distant ones connect through relays in between.

  3. Step 3: Message, share and talk

    Use the same inbox you always do. Messages, photos and push-to-talk route across the mesh, queue when someone is out of range and deliver on reconnect.

FAQ

Questions crews ask us.

Does Mariner Mesh need cell service or Wi-Fi?
No. Once your group is set up, the app communicates directly between devices. When cellular or Wi-Fi is available it will use it for speed and range, and it falls back to the mesh automatically when coverage disappears.
How far apart can two devices be?
Range depends on terrain, weather and how the devices are positioned. Over open water with clear line of sight, expect roughly 3–5 miles device to device. In dense terrain or below deck, expect substantially less. Every additional group member in between extends the usable footprint of the whole mesh.
Do I need extra hardware?
No additional hardware is required for standard use — Mariner Mesh runs on the radios already in your phone. Optional external mesh radios are supported for crews that need maximum range, and are configured from within the app.
Is Mariner Mesh a replacement for VHF or an EPIRB?
No, and it is important to be clear about this. Mariner Mesh is a group communication tool, not a distress or safety-of-life system. Always carry the VHF, EPIRB, PLB and other safety equipment required for your vessel and passage, and use them for emergencies.
How much battery does it use?
Mesh mode is designed for long days out. Background relaying is duty-cycled and typically uses a few percent of battery per hour. Sustained push-to-talk and photo transfer use more, and the app shows a live estimate on the radar screen.
Can someone outside my group read my messages?
No. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, and relayed traffic passes through other devices as ciphertext they cannot read. Encryption keys are generated on your device and never leave it.
Does it work internationally?
Yes. Off-grid mesh communication does not depend on a carrier, so it behaves the same anywhere in the world. Check local regulations if you plan to use optional external radio hardware.
